The California Highway Patrol reported a multi-vehicle accident in Monterey County on February 2. The crash occurred shortly after 4:30 p.m. on Maher Road near Tamara Lane, just outside of Royal Oaks.
According to the authorities, a 17-year-old Hollister boy was speeding in a white Honda Accord traveling south on Maher Road, crossing double yellow lines. Meanwhile, a 29-year-old Watsonville man was driving a Honda Fit northbound. The Accord failed to navigate a slight turn, colliding with the Honda Fit, causing it to roll over. Both the driver and the 16-year-old passenger, who were not wearing seatbelts, were ejected from the vehicle. The 16-year-old passenger was fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The authorities are still investigating the cause of the fatal crash, although speeding and ignoring traffic rules seem to be the probable cause. The 17-year-old driver and the 29-year-old man sustained major injuries. It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.
