Authorities identified 13-year-old Zyiar Harris as the student who died after being hit by a vehicle last Wednesday in Detroit.
The fatal pedestrian accident took place on East Nevada Avenue and Healy Avenue. 65-year-old Debra White, of Detroit, is accused of Second-Degree Child Abuse and Failure to Stop at Scene Resulting in Death in reference to a car crash that claimed the life of 13-year-old Zyiar Harris.
As per the prosecutor’s office, the case will be reviewed again because the charges were reportedly issued before Harris was killed. White was a driver for the ABC Bus Company that transported Harris from a Detroit school on April 6. At about 4:41 p.m. that day, police responded to the scene and, on arrival, found medics giving medical aid to the victim.
The teen was reportedly rushed to a local hospital, but later succumbed to his injuries on April 10. The reports indicated that White did not activate the bus’s stoplights and stop sign to help Harris cross the street safely. Harris was charged on April 10 and given a $50,000 bond. No other details are available.
An investigation is ongoing.
