The California Highway Patrol reported a motor vehicle crash on Thursday morning. The accident happened close to Imperial Highway at around 1:10 a.m. The collision involved two vehicles.
Both vehicles were severely damaged when they came to a stop up against the centre divider.
When police arrived on the scene, they found an unidentified woman who was unresponsive and not breathing, the officer said. The woman may have gotten out of her car prior to being hit by another car or she may have been ejected from it, according to investigators.
At the scene, she was pronounced dead.
Investigators questioned the other vehicle’s driver who was unharmed. The investigation included at least two additional vehicles that got into the accident after the initial collision.
The fatal crash caused the southbound side of the motorway to be closed for several hours.
Around 5 a.m., the lanes were reopened.
