The California Highway Patrol reported a motor vehicle crash in Nevada County. The accident happened on Highway 49, McKnight Way north in Grass Valley at around 3:15 p.m.
When emergency personnel arrived, a 1996 Subaru Legacy that had overturned off the west side of the motorway had a man and a woman trapped inside. Authorities were able to free the passengers.
The woman was unconscious and was taken to the hospital, where she later passed away. During the collision, a dog also perished. The driver, identified by CHP as Grass Valley resident Brian Fogel, 26, was seriously hurt.
Fogel is being held in custody while receiving medical attention, and the CHP suspects alcohol to have played a role in the fatal crash.
