The California Highway Patrol reported a pedestrian accident in Modesto on Thursday night. The accident occurred on State Route 108 at around 11:55 p.m.
According to the officials, a 2012 Ford Expedition was headed east on the road when it struck a man. The man had been standing on the south shoulder of the road. As the Ford approached the man, he suddenly stepped onto the road, in front of the vehicle. The Ford could not avoid hitting the man.
The man was fatally injured and was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the man has not been disclosed at this time. The driver of the Ford was not injured in the collision.
The cause of the fatal crash is still being investigated. It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.
