A tragic series of collisions involving 10 vehicles in Tempe on Monday morning resulted in the death of a child and serious injuries to several others. Arizona Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers were called to the multi-vehicle accident near the Rural Road and McClintock Drive ramps just before 8 a.m.
The initial fatal crash occurred when an SUV changed lanes on U.S. 60, triggering a chain reaction involving seven other vehicles, including a loaded commercial dump truck. A pickup truck pulling a utility trailer then struck the median, rolled onto its side, and fatally injured a child.
As troopers worked to divert traffic, another SUV crashed into an unoccupied DPS patrol SUV, injuring the driver, who is suspected of impairment. Westbound lanes of U.S. 60 were closed until noon, with crews cleaning up a diesel spill. The hauling company involved expressed cooperation with the investigation.
