A fatal hit-and-run accident shook southbound State Route 163 (SR-163) near downtown San Diego on Wednesday morning. According to Salvador Castro of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), around 6 a.m., a man walking within the traffic lanes of southbound SR-163, north of Interstate 5, was struck by an unidentified vehicle.
Responding officers found the pedestrian in the center median, where he succumbed to major injuries. The driver fled the scene, heading southbound on SR-163. CHP temporarily closed two right lanes of southbound SR-163 into downtown, redirecting traffic to northbound and southbound Interstate 5.
A toxicology report is pending to ascertain if driving under the influence was a factor. The investigation into this tragic, fatal crash is ongoing.
