The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department reported a motor vehicle accident on Thursday morning. The accident happened on I-5 close to American Lake.

Two teenagers were travelling in a 2020 Kia Sportage eastbound on Lakewood’s Freedom Bridge when the driver struck the tractor-trailer driven by a 57-year-old Tacoma man, which was travelling south on a collector-distributor road.

According to Trooper John Dattilo, the Kia driver ran a red light at the intersection and struck the truck’s front right side, which led to the loss of control and jackknifing.

The semi-truck driver was taken to Madigan Army Medical Centre, where he succumbed to his injuries. His identity is not yet known.

One boy was accused by the prosecution of vehicular homicide and illegally keeping a stolen car. The other was accused of stealing a car without authorization. The fatal crash is still being investigated by the officials.
