On Tuesday morning, one person died while another suffered injuries following a multi-vehicle accident in southeast Travis County.
As per the initial information, the fatal three-vehicle pile-up took place in the 9100 block of the U.S. Highway 183. The early reports showed that a truck hauling a trailer struck the rear of a car that slowed down on the highway. Due to the impact, the car went into oncoming traffic, was struck by another vehicle and got engulfed in flames.
After that, the truck and trailer crashed into a nearby church. Officials are working to stabilize the church building and reported that no one in the church was injured. Authorities confirmed that one person was killed in the accident while another was declared a trauma alert. The trauma alert victim was rushed to St. David’s South Medical Center in Austin for treatment.
All lanes of U.S. Highway 183 were shut down near FM 973 in southeast Travis County as crews worked at the scene. The intersection of U.S. 183 and FM 973 is south of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and north of the State Highway 130 and State Highway 45 interchange. The nearest cross street to the accident is McKenzie Drive, which is just south of the Colton area. No other details are available.
An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
