1 person killed after a vehicle goes off road and crashes into a building in La Mesa (La Mesa, CA)

On Wednesday evening, a man lost his life after police say a vehicle went off University Avenue and slammed into a commercial building in La Mesa.

The incident took place at around 5:30 p.m. in the 7300 block of University Avenue, La Mesa police Lt. Katy Lynch stated. At the time of the crash, an officer was going eastbound when they witnessed the vehicle ahead of them veer off the road and crash through the glass windows of the building, according to Lynch.

According to the reports, the victim, identified as a 40-year-old man, was in the building when the car smashed through the windows and several interior walls. “Multiple officers actively responded and ran inside,” Lynch mentioned. “They started providing aid immediately. We had fire department personnel on the scene very quickly. Unfortunately, they declare one individual deceased at this time.”

The vehicle’s driver, a 61-year-old man, was taken to a local hospital with non-critical injuries, Lynch added. It is not yet known if drugs or alcohol played a role in the accident. No other details are immediately available.

The crash remains under active review.
