The Police Department reported a motor vehicle crash on Lafourche Parish highway on Christmas night.
The collision involves only one vehicle.
The accident happened near Marcello Boulevard on La. Highway 308 at around 8 p.m.
49-year-old Francisco Lopez-Mendoza entered a left curve on the highway while driving a Mazda 3.
The Mazda veered off the right side of the road, struck a utility pole, and overturned for an unidentified reason.
Despite wearing seatbelts, according to troopers, Mendoza only suffered moderate injuries, while the other passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
Mendoza was detained at the hospital after additional investigation revealed he was intoxicated and was charged with vehicular homicide while intoxicated.
The identity of the deceased victim has not been disclosed.
The fatal crash is being investigated by the police.
