1 person dead, 6 others injured after an 8-vehicle pile-up on 5 Freeway in Elysian Park (Los Angeles, CA)

On Friday morning, at least one person died and six people were injured following a multi-vehicle wreck on the 5 Freeway in the Elysian Park area.

As per the initial information, the 8-vehicle pile-up took place moments after 8 a.m. on the southbound 5 Freeway at Stadium Way. The early reports revealed that the incident involved eight vehicles, including two big rigs.

One person was declared dead at the scene by the officials. At least six people received injuries. A 67-year-old woman, a 29-year-old woman and an 11-year-old girl were taken to local hospitals with unspecified injuries. Another four people who were hurt in the accident refused hospitalization.

Responders freed the pinned victims from their vehicles. It is unknown if the massive storm which dumped torrential rain on the region led to the accident. A Sig Alert was announced and several southbound lanes of the freeway were shut down as crews worked at the scene. No other details are available.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
