The California Highway Patrol reported a motor vehicle crash on Sunday morning. The accident happened at Whittier Boulevard on the southbound 5 freeway at around 1:20 a.m.
On the road above the 5 Freeway, two cars collided; one of the cars was launched off the bridge and down onto the motorway below, where it landed on its roof.
The driver of that car, a dark-colored BMW coupe, was found dead at the scene after being found trapped inside.
The cause of the accident is still being investigated. It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs played a role in the accident.
For a brief period on Sunday morning, the southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway were closed in order to conduct a fatal crash investigation and conduct cleanup tasks.
