All lanes of Interstate 580 in East Oakland were blocked after a multi-vehicle pile-up that killed at least one person and injured several others on Tuesday night.
Just after 9 p.m., CHP officers got information of a wreck on I-580 near the Dutton Avenue off-ramp. The preliminary reports indicated that the collision pushed one vehicle into the center divider before coming to a stop in the fast lane and sent another vehicle into the slow lane.
At least half a dozen other vehicles approaching the crash scene either hit one or the other vehicle, suffering damage from driving over the wreckage from the original collision before managing to move to the side of the highway. Oakland Fire Department firefighters and paramedics actively responded to the scene and, on arrival, they found at least one rolled over vehicle.
Reports further showed that multiple people received medical attention. One person was rushed to a hospital but died on the way. CHP officers announced a Sig-alert at 9:40 p.m., blocking all I-580 lanes with no estimated time of reopening before reopening No. 1 lanes in both directions at about 10:30 p.m. The Sig-alert was ended just before 10:45pm.
The wreck remains under active review.
