On late Wednesday, a 20-year-old passenger died and four others were hospitalized after a car collided with a light pole and a tree along a road in the Escondido area.
The preliminary reports showed that the driver, a 17-year-old boy, was traveling south on Valley Parkway, south of Claudian Road, when he ran off the roadway at around 11:35 p.m. for unknown reasons. Just then, his 2000 Honda Prelude struck a curb, slammed into the light pole and a tree. The 20-year-old passenger, of Escondido, succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
The driver and three other passengers, including another 17-year-old boy and two 18-year-old men, received serious injuries and were rushed to hospitals for treatment. All three are residents of Escondido. Authorities believe that alcohol or drugs did not contribute to the collision. A southbound lane of Valley Parkway was shut down until about 2:30 a.m. Thursday.
The incident remains under active review.
