Netflix is in talks with Spotify about partnering on a number of new projects, including a potential music awards show or a live concert series.
As Netflix aims to regain its crown as a one-stop-shop for television, the streaming giant is in talks with Spotify to collaborate on music events. People close to the matter say the partnership could result in a number of projects, such as a music awards show or a live concert series. It could also include celebrity interviews and “shorter-turnaround” documentaries.
Netflix is also rebooting the classic talent show, “Star Search.” With a newly added focus on music, Netflix is also debuting its new show, “Building the Band,” next week. Further, sources say another music competition is in the works that it aims to release in the next few months.
“Building the Band” will be hosted by Backstreet Boys’ AJ McLean, and features musicians auditioning to be in a new ensemble. The show’s twist lies in the fact that contestants will not see one another until they begin rehearsing together.
Jeff Gaspin, who secured “The Voice” at NBCUniversal, will be spearheading Netflix’s efforts to find the “next great music competition show,” as well as expand the streamer’s unscripted content.
According to Gaspin, he doesn’t expect Netflix to become a whole-cloth news programmer. But the company is working with The Daily Beast to create a quick-turnaround series of “buzzy nonpolitical news events.” However, Netflix execs have debated whether to include big celebrity interviews. These would inevitably appear in snippets on social media, negating the need for people to tune in to the streamer to watch.
Millions of households “cut the cord” on their cable service over the last 15 years, and Netflix was the go-to for home entertainment. Nowadays, with numerous competitors in the streaming space, Netflix wants to ensure it offers something for everyone: from scripted shows and films to reality TV, live programming, and comedy.
