In a recent interview with will.i.am, rapper Gunna discussed his creative process, his upcoming album, and his approach to making music. When the conversation turned towards AI, Gunna admitted he wants to tap into the genre—much like Timbaland did recently.

Gunna is speaking with will.i.am, who has pioneered RAiDiO.FYI, a new set of AI-guided radio stations that can hold conversations with listeners. In speaking about the technology, Gunna says he is open to experimentation and that he is “not against it” with plans to tap into it. For now, Gunna says he’s taking his time to explore AI’s potential in the music creation process. That’s something will.i.am has pioneered as well, with the release of FYI—an AI assistant to bounce ideas off of and keep the creative juices flowing.

Gunna says he believes AI will become increasingly significant in the music industry, predicting that by 2030, there will be “full on AI artists that produce it, write it, in the videos dancing, rapping in the video.” Speaking on the topic of these AI artists, Gunna tells will.i.am, “I for sure need to support them, get with them,” hinting at his willingness to sign and collaborate with AI artists in the future. For now, he’s focused on his own creative process and how AI can help him improve that.

That move is in stark contrast to producer Timbaland’s recent controversy in the space. He recently launched an AI-focused entertainment company called Stage Zero and introduced his first AI artist he calls TaTa. TaTa’s music is created in collaboration between human creators and the AI music platform Suno. But that partnership drew ire when Timbaland released a video showcasing him taking an original beat created by K Fresh—without approval—and feeding it into the AI platform.

Timbaland used K Fresh’s original beat without permission to create an AI-generated remix on the Suno platform. With no prior consent, credit, or compensation when this happened, the incident sparked a major backlash online. K Fresh and his attorney wrote an open letter to Timbaland entitled “Dear Suno And Timbaland, Do Better.” That letter called for a public apology and a list of things, including a commitment to avoid using unlicensed music in future demos.

Timbaland responded to the backlash by issuing a public apology on his Instagram, admitting that he failed to verify th ebeat’s origin. He clarified that the remix he created was not monetized or commercial released and was only used to demonstrate the AI’s creative potential. Timbaland removed the demo from the Suno platform, but K Fresh and his legal team are still insisting on proof of removal from Suno’s training model.

Hopefully when Gunna sets his sights on creating an AI artist, he’ll do a better job of sourcing beats for the artist to modify.
