On Saturday night, a 70-year-old man was killed and his wife sustained serious injuries in a DUI accident in Pierce County.

The fatal incident took place at about 11:20 p.m. in the 13100 block of Spanaway Loop Road South. A Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy reported that a 22-year-old man was driving at a high speed when he rear-ended the victims’ car.

On arrival, medics rushed the 70-year-old male driver to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. Officials mentioned that his 69-year-old wife is in critical condition. The 22-year-old driver was arrested for a DUI and was booked into the Pierce County Jail on suspicion of vehicular homicide and vehicular assault.

The crash remains under active investigation.
