A 25-year-old Kent man and a 30-year-old Tacoma woman suffered critical injuries after a head-on accident on early Thursday morning, along Highway 18 near Kent and Auburn. The incident took place at around 2:33 a.m.

As per a spokesperson late Thursday morning, March 11 at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, both victims remain in critical condition in ICU. The Tacoma woman was steering a 1999 Lexus ES eastbound in the westbound lanes just west of Southeast 304th Street. Meanwhile, the Kent man was traveling on a 2009 Toyota Camry westbound in the westbound lanes when the cars crashed head-on. Both victims were the sole occupants of their respective vehicles.

The Lexus spun and came to a stop on top of a metal guardrail on the left shoulder. The Camry rotated and rested on the right shoulder, facing the wrong way. Resultantly, the crash completely destroyed both vehicles.

Later, State Patrol shut down the highway for more than four hours.

The crash remains under review. Furthermore, it is unclear if alcohol or played a factor in the crash, as per the State Patrol. Charges are pending against the Tacoma woman.
