The Santa Maria firefighters and California Highway Patrol reported a multi-vehicle accident in Santa Maria on December 31. The accident occurred on northbound Highway 101 near the North Broadway interchange around 2.30 p.m.

According to the officials, the incident was initiated by a wrong-way vehicle crashing into another. Both vehicles were left smoking after the crash, and heavy extrication was required to remove a few victims. All northbound lanes were blocked due to debris and the investigation into the collision. Two people were fatally injured and were pronounced dead following the crash.

The authorities are still investigating the cause of the fatal crash. It is not yet known if alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision. There are no other details available at this time.
