49-year-old woman dead, two people injured after a pedestrian crash in Phoenix (Phoenix, AZ)

On Monday, a 49-year-old woman was killed while two others suffered injuries following a traffic collision in Phoenix.

As per the initial information, the fatal pedestrian crash took place on Interstate 17 near Thunderbird road. The preliminary reports showed that a black Toyota Camry ran out of gas close to Thunderbird Road and was stopped in the center lane. The hazard lights were off at that time. At some point of time, a Tesla, driven by a 49-year-old woman, slammed into the Toyota Camry.

As the woman got out of her car, the driver of the Honda Pilot struck her and the Tesla. The woman suffered major injuries and was declared dead at the scene by the officials. Three male occupants of the Honda pilot fled the scene but they were later located by the officers. One of them was transported to the hospital with non-fatal injuries.

The female driver of the Camry was also taken to the hospital where she is expected to survive. Officials stated that another vehicle might have been involved in the collision. According to the responders, there was a massive traffic backup through much of north Phoenix and three cars with extensive head-on damage were found at the scene.

The northbound lanes of Interstate 17 were shut down as crews worked at the scene. The freeway was back open at about 8:30 a.m. and some residual delays remained through the late morning commute. No other information has been provided.

An investigation into the crash is ongoing.
