A 65-year-old man, of Sun City, lost his life following a suspected DUI crash late Wednesday night in Carlsbad.

As per the initial information, the fatal pedestrian accident took place on Interstate 5. The preliminary reports showed that the victim pulled over on the right shoulder of southbound I-5, close to Cannon Road, just before 11:20 p.m. due to a possible issue with his SUV.

The victim was outside of his vehicle and might have been fixing a problem when a southbound sedan crashed into the back of the parked SUV. According to the authorities, the victim got trapped and then dragged onto the freeway lanes. On arrival, first responders performed CPR and rushed the victim to the hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.

The male driver of the car that struck the victim’s SUV was administered field sobriety tests, and he was eventually taken into custody on suspicion of DUI. The suspect driver arrested was identified as 51-year-old Douglas Payne, of Carlsbad. Payne faces felony charges, including suspicion of DUI and gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. No other details are available.

The crash remains under active review.
