On Thursday, a vehicle crashed into a power pole bringing the wires down in north Bellingham.

As per the initial information, officers actively responded to the intersection of Northwest Drive and W Smith Road at approximately 4am after getting reports of a single-vehicle crash. The preliminary investigation showed that a vehicle slammed into a power pole knocking down the pole across the road and wires were also down south of the intersection.

According to the eyewitnesses, the driver walked away from the scene after the collision. Officials found the driver nearby and WCFD7 personnel were contacted to evaluate the driver’s condition. The driver did not need to be taken to the hospital and was released. Puget Sound Energy reported an outage in the area due to that affected 386 PSE customer addresses.

Northwest Drive was shut down to all traffic between Larson Road and W Smith Road as crews worked to clean up the scene. Signs were in place showing a detour route through Aldrich Road. As of 7:15am, PSE said that power would be restored to the remaining 266 impacted addresses by 2pm. As of 3pm, the estimate time had been updated to be 4pm. No other details are made available.

The crash remains under investigation.
