1 person killed, several others injured following a two-vehicle crash in North County (Carlsbad, CA)

One person was killed and several others received injuries following a suspected DUI crash Wednesday morning in North County.

As per the initial information, the fatal car accident took place on northbound Interstate 5. The preliminary reports showed that an Oceanside resident, identified as 20-year-old Isidrone Martinez, was driving a Honda Civic northbound on I-5, south of La Costa Avenue at around 2:45 a.m. The car had four passengers aged between 20 and 22 years old.

Martinez was driving through a Caltrans construction zone with two closed northbound lanes when he swerved to the right into the closure. When he veered back to the left, Martinez’s Civic collided with the right rear of a Toyota Prius driven by a 33-year-old San Diego resident with a 33-year-old male passenger.

Due to the impact, his Civic swerved again to the right up an embank, causing the vehicle to flip over an unspecified number of times. A 20-year-old male passenger was thrown from the Civic during the crash. The passenger was declared dead at the scene. Martinez was rushed to the hospital with major life-threatening injuries.

He faces multiple charges pertaining to the crash, including felony DUI causing death. His other passengers, two 20-year-olds from Oceanside and a 22-year-old Valley Center woman were also rushed to area hospitals with major injuries.

Both the driver and passenger in the Prius incurred only minor injuries. The incident brought traffic on I-5 to a halt for hours with Caltrans closing a portion of the freeway until about 8:20 a.m. At that time, drivers were rerouted around the area via La Costa Avenue. No other information is available.

The accident remains under investigation.
