One person died and others received injuries following a traffic collision early Saturday morning on the westbound lanes of Interstate 80.
As per the initial information, the crash involving three vehicles took place at about 2:22 a.m. on I-80 near the MacArthur Maze interchange that transitions the highway into I-580 and I-880, east of the Bay Bridge in Oakland.
The early reports showed that a disabled BMW had come to a rest in the westbound lanes when the Honda slammed into it. After some time, a pickup truck also crashed into the BMW. Despite the life-saving efforts, a passenger of the Honda, only identified as a man, died of his injuries at the scene.
The driver of the Honda was rushed to a local trauma center in critical condition, while all other people involved in the crash sustained moderate injuries. Authorities shut down the interchange for approximately an hour before opening one lane to through traffic. Within several more hours, all lanes of the highway were reopened to traffic.
The reports also revealed that no one from inside the idled BMW called 911 before the crash. Officials urged that anyone whose vehicle breaks down on the highway should remain inside with seatbelts fastened and call 911. No other details are available.
The incident remains under review.
