56-year-old Eastpointe man killed after his car smashes into a statue on Belle Isle (Detroit, MI)

On Wednesday, 56-year-old Eastpointe man lost his life after his car smashed into a statue before catching fire on Belle Isle.

As per the initial information, the fatal car crash took place at around 5:35 p.m. at the intersection of Belle Isle Central and Inselruhe Avenue. The preliminary investigation indicated that a vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed without headlights when it crashed into a statue at the intersection.

The officers managed to extricate the driver out of the car before it got engulfed in flames. The driver was unconscious and CPR was performed until EMS arrived. He was rushed to the hospital where he was later declared dead. No other details were provided.

An investigation is ongoing.
