A traffic collision at the Zaragoza Bridge on Monday afternoon killed one person and left thousands without power while causing traffic delays for the evening rush hour.
As per the initial information, the fatal incident involving two semi-trucks took place at Pan American and Wynn, close to the Ysleta Port of Entry, at about 3 p.m. The early reports showed that one of the 18-wheelers flipped over and knocked down electrical lines, which caused the outage. More than 2,000 El Paso Electric customers were left without electricity for about a half-hour before it could be restored.
The firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate a victim pinned in the wreckage. Authorities confirmed that the crash led to a fatality. As of 5:30 p.m., police said that Pan American remained completely blocked from Americas to Wynn and southbound commercial traffic was being advised to use the old route. Police said while Loop 375 was open, traffic was flowing very slowly through the area.
The cause of the crash remains under review.
