On early Monday, a man lost his life after being struck by a vehicle in New Orleans.
The fatal incident took place on the eastbound Interstate-10 high rise at about 1:18 a.m. The early reports indicated that the man was ejected from his car onto the roadway on the downslope of the steep bridge and then he got hit by another vehicle which triggered a four-vehicle pile-up.
At this time, it is unclear why the man was lying on the roadway but officials said that the man’s Honda became disabled earlier for unknown reasons. Shortly after, an oncoming Crown Victoria Sedan hit both the victim and his Honda. The driver of an oncoming Infiniti pulled over at the scene, but that vehicle was then hit by a fourth vehicle, a Nissan.
Four occupants of the involved vehicles incurred only minor injuries. All the drivers reportedly stayed at the scene and cooperated with the officers. It is unknown if any of the drivers was cited or arrested. Impairment on the part of all the drivers is also not known as of now.
The incident led to the closure of the eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 at the high rise for approximately four hours, and traffic was rerouted off the interstate. All lanes were back open by 5 a.m., causing little disturbance to morning commutes.
The crash remains under review.
