On Tuesday night, a 53-year-old man received critical head injuries after being struck by a car driven without its headlights in downtown San Diego’s East Village neighborhood.

As per the initial information, the auto-pedestrian accident took place at about 7:30 p.m. near the dividing line between the East Village and Barrio Logan neighborhoods. The preliminary investigation revealed that a 23-year-old man driving a Ford Fiesta hit the pedestrian while turning from South 16th Street onto National Avenue.

The driver was traveling north on 16th Street and had just turned left onto National Avenue when he crossed over a double-yellow line and hit the victim. The man was walking in a left turn lane on National Avenue at the time of the collision.

The pedestrian had a brain bleed, skull fractures and a fracture of the upper bone in one of his arms. On arrival, emergency crews rushed the victim to a hospital with critical injuries. No further information has been released as of Tuesday night.

The crash remains under investigation.
