An 18-month-old Gerardo Chavez Morales died of his injuries at the hospital after he was hit by a vehicle Sunday in North Hills.

As per the initial information, firefighters and paramedics responded to the area of 15500 block of West Nordhoff Street at 7:35 a.m. on reports of a crash. According to eyewitnesses, at least one of the vehicles “bounced” into a wall which caused injuries to the child and a woman.

At that point of time, the two victims were standing on a corner near a food cart when a silver 2016 Honda HRV attempted to turn left onto Langdon Avenue from westbound Nordhoff and sideswiped an approaching vehicle traveling north on Nordhoff. The HRV then kept on accelerating and jumped the curb where the vehicle hit pedestrians on the corner.

A woman sustained injuries in the accident, along with an unrelated child, who was with his grandparents and was in a stroller when he was hit. The boy later succumbed to his injuries at a hospital. Police did not reveal the child’s name, but he was identified by family and friends as Gerardo Chavez Morales.

The vehicle that was sideswiped did not pull over after the collision and the driver was initially sought on suspicion of hit-and-run. According to LAPD, the party involved in the crash voluntarily came to the their Valley Traffic Division Station at about 4 pm Sunday and was cooperative when being interrogated by detectives. The person was released pending further investigation and no arrests have been made as yet.

The incident remains under review.
