A traffic collision on Browns Bridge Road in Gainesville earlier this afternoon left five people in hospital, including three children. The accident also led to major traffic delays, blocking the road at Memorial Park Drive due to repair work.
The preliminary reports showed that a driver was attempting to turn left onto Browns Bridge Road, but did not yield to oncoming traffic. Just then, the 21-year-old woman made a right turn and came into the way of a GMC Yukon with five people inside, including three children. The force of the collision caused the GMC to go off the road and into a utility pole. Part of the pole fell on the ground due to the impact while the incident also brought down power lines.
The reports also revealed that that debris from the crash hit a third vehicle as well. On arrival, first responders took all five victims in the GMC to the hospital with non-fatal injuries. The driver of the other vehicle, Jeannie Adkins of Oakwood, incurred minor injuries but did not go to the hospital. Authorities confirmed a citation to her for failing to yield while turning left.
The accident caused major traffic problems in the area as the broken power pole and downed power lines prompted authorities to shut down Browns Bridge Road at Memorial Park Drive. Portions of Memorial Park Drive were closed down as well. The incident took place at 3:20 p.m., but crews were worked late into the night to repair the damages and open the road again. Deputies, the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT), and Georgia Power were all on the scene. No other details are available.
The crash remains under investigation.
