On Sunday, 34-year-old Stacy Pickering, of Moses Lake, was killed in a DUI accident on Interstate 90 while police took 36-year-old Donald Burgeis into custody.

The incident took place just after 4 p.m., seven miles west of Ritzville. As per the initial information, Burgeis was driving a minivan on the freeway along with three passengers, including two children when he veered off the road and crashed into the median. Then, he attempted to re-enter the freeway, but the vehicle flipped over and came to rest on its top.

Pickering, one of the vehicle’s occupants succumbed to their injuries at the scene. A 9-month-old girl and a 12-year-old boy, who were in the minivan, remained uninjured. The authorities confirmed that speeding played a role in the fatal accident.

They also believe that drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash. Burgeis received injuries following the crash and was taken to East Adams Rural by the medics. Officers stated that Burgeis is facing a vehicular homicide charge.

An investigation is ongoing at this time.
