On Tuesday night, a high speed two-vehicle collision caused serious injuries to two people, San Antonio police said.

The incident was reported at about 8 p.m. in the westbound lanes of the 400 block of U.S. Highway 90, close to 36th Street on the West Side. According to the initial reports, the BMW was going at a high rate of speed behind a black Honda, which was also traveling beyond the speed limit.

Afterwards, the Honda changed lanes to avoid colliding with a Hyundai Elantra, police stated. However, the BMW was not able to avoid the Elantra and hit the car from behind. The driver and the 18-year-old passenger in the BMW were not wearing their seatbelts and both sustained serious bodily injuries. On arrival, paramedics rushed both of them to University Hospital via an ambulance.

The passenger was listed in critical condition following the crash, according to SAPD. The condition of the driver is unknown at this time. The crash did not cause injuries to anyone in the Elantra. Police said that criminal charges are expected.

The crash remains under investigation.
