On early Wednesday morning, a 27-year-old mother will potentially face DUI charges after her car went down an embankment off Interstate 15 near Bonsall, claiming life of her 5-year-old daughter and causing critical injuries to her two toddlers.

The single-vehicle crash took place at around 2:25 a.m. on northbound I-15 north of Gopher Canyon Road, CHP Officer Juan Escobar stated. A 27-year-old San Diego woman was heading northbound in a 2009 Hyundai Genesis sedan with her three young children in the car when, for reasons unknown, she swerved to the right and the car rolled down an embankment, Escobar mentioned.

A 5-year-old girl and a 3-year-old girl were thrown from the car after the impact, the officer added. However, a 1-year-old boy remained in a child restraint seat in the car. The 5-year-old girl was declared deceased at the scene, Escobar said. The two other children were flown to Rady Children’s Hospital, where they were listed in critical condition, Escobar continued. The current condition of the two toddlers remains unknown.

The children’s mother, whose name was not immediately released, received minimal injuries and was transported to a hospital for treatment, Escobar added. Alcohol seemed to have played a role in the crash. Once medically cleared, she was expected to be detained on multiple charges, including felony DUI causing death, Escobar concluded.

A SigAlert was issued at around 3:05 a.m., closing down the right two lanes on northbound 15 north of Gopher Canyon Road. The lanes were opened again to traffic by 8 a.m.

An investigation is continuing.
