A tragic incident unfolded Monday morning when a multi-vehicle accident on U.S. Highway 96 claimed the life of a nursing home resident and left others injured.
According to a Texas DPS report, heavy smoke in the area led to a misjudgment of speed by the driver of a Dodge Caravan, resulting in a fatal crash with a Ford F-150 and Chevrolet Equinox. Subsequent impacts involved a truck-tractor and a Ford F-250.
Karen Underwood, 64, of Bronson, and one passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries, while another passenger, Patricia Ritter, 80, of Pineland, tragically succumbed to her injuries.
Ritter was a resident of Legacies Nursing and Rehabilitation, en route to M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Tiffani Bradberry, the nursing home’s administrator, confirmed the identities.
