73-year-old Jerry Hughes dead after a hit-and-run crash in Jefferson Davis Parish (Jennings, LA)

Authorities identified 73-year-old Jerry Hughes, from Welsh, as the man who lost his life following a bicycle accident on Monday morning in Jefferson Davis Parish.

As per the initial information, the fatal hit-and-run crash took place at around 8:30 a.m. on La. Hwy 1126 near Farm Supply Road. The preliminary investigation showed that Jerry Hughes was riding a bicycle east on La. 1126 when a vehicle also going east struck the bicyclist from behind.

The driver of the SUV drove away from the scene after the collision. Hughes suffered major injuries and was declared dead at the scene by the officials. A toxicology sample was obtained from Hughes and will be given for analysis.

The hit-and-run vehicle is described as a small white SUV with damage to the hood area and heavy damage to the windshield. Officers have asked for the public’s help in finding the vehicle and driver. No other details are made available.

The incident remains under active review.
