A tragic multi-vehicle accident unfolded on Monday in Mesquite on I-30, claiming the life of a woman and leaving two others hospitalized. Just after 12:30 p.m., a semi-truck lost control, causing its trailer to hit the median and overturn in the westbound lanes.
The trailer slid into the eastbound lanes, colliding with a van and two SUVs. The van’s driver was critically injured and was rushed to the hospital early Wednesday morning. She succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The driver was later identified as 50-year-old Amanda Smith.
Several cats from the van were taken to the Mesquite Animal Shelter. A 74-year-old SUV driver, Freda Easley, is in critical condition, while the other SUV driver, 37-year-old Kefyalew Jaleta, is stable. The fatal crash investigation is ongoing, and no criminal charges have been filed at this time.
