On Saturday, a 5-year-old boy was hospitalized after he was struck by a vehicle on the Southeast Side.
As per the initial information, the hit-and-run crash took place at about 6:15 p.m. in the 1300 block of Avant Avenue. The early reports showed that the child was standing with his father and grandmother on a sidewalk, ordering ice cream from the ice cream truck that was parked along the curb.
The child was reportedly asked to wait with his grandmother while his father went to their home across the street. As his father left, the boy followed him and got hit by a vehicle. The driver stopped for a while after hitting the boy, but fled the scene before the arrival of officers.
The child received minimal injuries on the left side of his face and his back but his mother took him to an area hospital for treatment. Once the driver is found, they will be charged with failure to stop and render aid – moving, officials said. No other details are available.
The incident remains under active review.
