A tragic 35-vehicle pileup occurred on Saturday morning on foggy Interstate 5 west of Bakersfield, resulting in two fatalities and hospitalising nine others. The multi-vehicle accident was reported around 7:30 a.m. near Millux Road and took place in low visibility conditions.
Kern County Fire Department’s Jim Calhoun described the chaotic fatal crash, with 17 passenger vehicles and 18 big rigs involved. Two individuals were fatally injured and were pronounced dead at the scene, and nine with minor injuries were transported to area hospitals. The identity of the deceased victims is not yet known at this time.
Due to the ongoing investigation and cleanup, southbound I-5 between Millux Road and Old River Road remains closed, with traffic diverted to eastbound Highway 223.
