On Friday morning, a woman suffered critical injuries after being hit by a vehicle on a highway in Grand Rapids.
As per the initial information, the auto-pedestrian crash took place at about 11:15 a.m. on US-131. The preliminary investigation indicated that a woman was southbound on US-131 when her vehicle slipped on an unknown “oily substance” and crashed into a wall on the side of the highway near the Wealthy Street exit.
After that, the woman came out of her vehicle and got struck by another vehicle that was traveling south. On arrival, emergency crews rushed the victim to the hospital, where she is listed in critical condition. A hazmat team responded to the scene to determine what the substance was.
Motorists were advised to avoid the S-curve as crews worked to clean up the substance. The right lanes of US-131 were shut down for hours, but all lanes were back open at approximately 3:30 p.m. No additional information has been provided.
The crash remains under investigation.
