Authorities identified 68-year-old Luann Backman, of Knoxville, as the woman who lost her life following a traffic collision Friday on I-40.
The fatal multi-vehicle accident took place on Interstate 40 near the Strawberry Plains Pike exit at about 1:30 p.m. According to the investigation reports, Backman was driving an SUV that tried to pass another vehicle on the shoulder while going westbound on I-40.
Her car veered back to the right and clipped the front of the other vehicle, causing both cars to hit the guardrail. One of the drivers was taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where she was later declared deceased. The victim was identified as 68-year-old Luann Backman. Backman’s car went over the guardrail and flipped over.
She was ejected from the vehicle as she was not buckled up at the time of the accident. Three occupants of the other vehicle remained unharmed. A part of Interstate 40 near Strawberry Plains Pike was closed as crews worked at the scene. No further details were provided.
An investigation continues.
