Officials identified 62-year-old Richard Floyd Nichols who died in a crash on Kearny Mesa Street (San Diego, CA)

Authorities released the name of 62-year-old Richard Floyd Nichols as the man who lost his life after being struck by a vehicle while crossing a busy Kearny Mesa street against a red light on Tuesday morning.

As per the initial investigation, the pedestrian was walking south in a crosswalk on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard at the intersection with Mercury Street at around 5:40 a.m. Just then, a Subaru traveling west on Clairemont Mesa Boulevard hit him.

The driver of the vehicle, a 40-year-old man, had a green light. On arrival, medics rushed him to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries at 6:20 a.m. The county Medical Examiner’s Office identified the pedestrian on Tuesday evening as Richard Floyd Nichols.

The auto-pedestrian accident is under investigation.
