Authorities identified 50-year-old Joseph Bennett III as the man who lost his life following a rear-end collision Monday morning in West Oakland.
As per the initial information, the fatal car accident took place at around 1:50 a.m. in the 800 block of Frontage Road near Seventh Street. The preliminary reports showed that Bennett, an Oakland resident, was driving a Ford Explorer southbound on Frontage Road when he hit the back of a trailer that was parked in the center divider.
He was declared dead at the scene by the officials. It is unknown why Bennett was driving in the area, which is near some Port of Oakland terminals. At this time, it is also unclear if speed, alcohol or drugs contributed to the collision. No other details are provided.
An investigation is ongoing.
