Officials identified 40-year-old Brenda Lee Ybarra who died in a crash on the city’s West Side (San Antonio, TX)

Authorities identified 40-year-old Brenda Lee Ybarra as the woman who lost her life following a traffic accident that led to the shutdown of both sides of Highway 90 on the city’s West Side until further notice.

As per the initial information, the fatal single-vehicle crash took place at about 6:30 a.m. Friday on the eastbound side of the highway, just west of Callaghan Road. The preliminary reports showed that a woman was driving a pickup when she failed to maintain control of her vehicle and slammed into a Transguide sign.

The 40-year-old was rushed to a hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Brenda Lee Ybarra. Authorities believe that the driver was speeding at the time of the accident.

One woman who pulled over along the access road after the accident said that she recognized the truck involved as belonging to her daughter. Officers spoke with her at the scene, informing her of the death. The impact of the crash left a big dent in the metal base of the sign, with the sign itself leaning to one side. Police were concerned that the wind might cause it to fall onto either side of the highway.

They asked the Texas Department of Transportation to send its crews to assess the situation and make repairs. Police had initially closed lanes of the highway while an investigation was conducted. However, TxDOT workers eventually closed down the entire highway in that area while they worked at the scene. They expected it to remain blocked until 5 p.m. No other details are available.

An investigation is ongoing.
