Officials identified 23-year-old Austin Wilkes who died in a single-vehicle accident (Clarkesville, GA)

On Tuesday morning, officials released the name of 23-year-old Austin Wilkes, of Clarkesville, as the man who lost his life following a single-vehicle accident on Friday night.

The victim was identified as Austin Wilkes, 23, of the Cool Springs community. The investigation reports showed that Wilkes was heading southbound on Ben T Huiet Highway just before 10 p.m. on Oct. 1 when his pickup truck veered off the roadway for unknown reasons. When Wilkes tried to re-enter the road, he could not maintain control of his vehicle and collided with a culvert.

The truck rolled over as it struck a tree. Wikes was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident and he was ejected from the vehicle. An obituary from Hillside Memorial Chapel stated that Wilkes was a 2016 graduate of Habersham Central High School. He also was a graduate of North Georgia Technical College.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
