A teenage girl and a man lost their lives after getting struck by a vehicle late Wednesday in National City while the driver involved was detained in connection with the accident.
As per the initial information, the authorities actively responded to the 3100 block of East Plaza Boulevard at around 10:20 p.m. after getting reports of a crash involving pedestrians. On arrival, they found the two victims — a teenage girl and an adult man — on the ground and a female driver in a nearby Toyota sedan.
According to the officers, the driver was “experiencing signs and symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol.” The vehicle’s windshield was smashed, airbags deployed and a plastic bag caught in its grill due to the collision. The driver was later detained and taken to the police department for processing.
The victims seemed to be related in some fashion. The teenager died at the scene while the man was rushed to Scripps Mercy Hospital via an ambulance. He was later declared dead at the hospital. The traffic on East Plaza Boulevard was close down for hours during the investigation. It reopened in both directions by about 5:30 a.m. Thursday. No other details are available.
An investigation is continuing.
