A man was hospitalized after a sleepy driver went off Interstate 805 and plunged down a ravine early Thursday in Chula Vista.
As per the initial information, the single-vehicle crash took place in the northbound lanes of the freeway at Telegraph Canyon Road. According to an eyewitness, the male driver entered the northbound lanes of the freeway and seemed to ignore other drivers. The car then sped up and ran off the roadway at around 6:45 a.m., landing more than 400 feet down the ravine.
The emergency responders came to the driver’s aid, hiking down to reach him. They escorted him back up to the rear parking area of the Terra Nova Plaza shopping center for treatment. The driver, who walked up the ravine on his own, informed the officials that he left work at midnight, went to a casino, and then fell asleep on his way home. The man was taken to a local hospital in unknown condition. Alcohol is not believed to be involved in the wreck. No other details are available.
The accident remains under investigation.
