The California Highway Patrol reported a motor vehicle crash on Tuesday afternoon. Officers were responding to a crash on the northbound 5 Freeway at Hasley Canyon.
The driver of one of the involved vehicles stepped out of his car, leaped into the waiting CHP cruiser, and started driving away. Officers chased the car as it approached Highway 138 at speeds of 100 mph.
When the cruiser reached 87th Street West and West Avenue D, the suspect leaped out and hit the road as it continued to drive off the road before hitting a light pole. Police pulled the man away from the road because they thought the downed power pole would fall close to him.
The motorist was given life-saving procedures by CHP authorities on the site, who then drove him to a hospital where he was later declared dead. The fatal crash is still being investigated by the officials.
