Authorities identified Juan Carlos Gaspar, Selma Gaspar and 12-year-old Carlos Gaspar as the victims who lost their lives after a DUI crash that also injured three others on New Year’s Day in Phoenix.
As per the initial information, the fatal car accident took place near the South Mountain Loop 202 in Ahwatukee, close to 40th Street just before 9 p.m. The preliminary reports showed that a blue Ford Fusion driven by 23-year-old Ariyan Guy was speeding when it plowed into a Chevy Suburban carrying six people inside.
The impact of the crash pushed the Suburban off the roadway and caused it to flip multiple times. Juan Carlos Gaspar and Selma Gaspar died in the accident, along with their son, 12-year-old Carlos Gaspar. The other three victims received life-threatening injuries.
According to the reports, an eyewitness identified Guy as the person driving the Ford Fusion. Open containers of Dos Equis, Jack Daniel’s, and Tennessee Honey Whiskey were found inside. Guy confirmed to detectives that he bought the alcohol and admitted drinking it while driving.
The reports also added that a trooper who talked to Guy at the hospital noticed the smell of alcohol and multiple signs of potential impairment. Guy was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of reckless manslaughter and aggravated assault. He was being detained on a secured appearance bond of $200,000. It is not known if he posted that bond. No other details are available.
An investigation is ongoing.
