On Wednesday, a four-vehicle pile-up led to the closure of the southbound lanes of Interstate 5 in Bellingham.
As per the initial information, officers actively responded to the southbound lanes of I-5 at the Meridian Street interchange at approximately 8:45am after getting reports of a hit-and-run crash. The preliminary investigation showed that a Ford Ranger was southbound on Interstate 5 when the driver failed to maintain control and crashed into two cars and a dump truck.
The driver and passenger in the Ford ran from the scene on foot. Authorities managed to contact the passenger but the driver is still missing. Luckily, no one suffered injuries as a result of the wreck. All lanes were completely closed and by 8:50am the passing lane was back open. The accident seemed to have happened between the mainline right lane and the merging lane.
By 8:55am, traffic back-up in the southbound lanes extended 1-mile, reaching beyond the Northwest Drive interchange. Officers are searching for a white male, around 6-foot tall, last seen wearing blue jeans and a high-visibility orange sweatshirt. No other details are made available.
The incident remains under active review.
